The Goshogatani Kogo-ishi Ruins are the remnants of a mountain fortification built to help strengthen Japan against attack from other countries in the latter half of the 7th century.
Similar ruins have been discovered in about 10 locations in western Japan, however the Goshogatani Kogoishi Ruins feature massive stone fortifications and earthworks, and are still relatively intact, showing that they were considered an important part of the defense of the northern Kyushu region. From JR Yukuhashi Station take the Taiyo-koutsu “Shinmachi Line” bus for 20 minutes and get off at the “Tsutsumi” stop, then walk 30 minutes
